West coast
The swedish west coast stretches from Halmstad in the south to Stromstad up north. From Gothenburg and upwards it is mainly an archipelago full of skerries, islands and cliffs. Mostly red granite. Lovely scenery above water but not always such fun scenery below. One cannot expect more than 15 C water temperature on an average summer day (in some places up to 20C). Visibility is usually never more than 4-5 meters.
When based in Gothenburg it is curiously hard to find a divespot which is deeper than 30 meters. Even when diving on the outside of the exposed coastline of the archipelago.
Here are some suggestions (not a complete list).
| Marstrand |
West side, 30 m, unprotected from westerly winds. Bus from Gothenburg. Nice cliffs. Partyisland |
| Måseskär |
East side 27 mtrs, protected. |
| Svarten |
Half nautical mile south of Måseskär. 55 mtrs, exposed to westerlies. |
| Åstol |
South of island, 50 meters, unprotected. Close to traffic. |
| Gåseklåvan |
Djupt och dramatiskt dyk vid klippbrant. Gullmarsfjorden. |
| |
|
The best dive on the swedish westcoast is probably to be had on Väderöarna (Vaderoarna). They are some small islands outside the main archipelago. A small ferry departs from Stromstad every day during summer and a youth hostel can be found on the island.

Nice town that comes alive during summer. Considered a party place. Many places to dive if one has a boat. Dive shop H2O makes daytrips but mostly for Scubadivers. |
Transport &

Youth hostel in Lysekil. 150 SKR/night |
| Directions |
Bus from Gothenburg central station. 80 SKR 2 hrs. Walk a kilometer straight west to the sea. Or stop in the bay north of sailingboat harbour outside "Havets hus". In this bay one can dive to 30 meters.
Out on the cliffs facing the sea you will find a maximum depth of 25 meters, which is dangerously close to a traffic lane for yachts. Along these lovely red cliffs you will also find a lot of sunbathers. Deep dives close to Lysekil - check Gullmaren. |

Gullmarsfjorden is Swedens only fjord (deeper inside the fjord than outside along the coast.) Here you can easily find depths above 50 meters. Water gets somewhat murkier though. |
Transport &

Youth hostel in Lysekil. 150 SKR/night |
| Directions |
Bus from Gothenburg central station to the Lysekil area. 80 SKR 2 hrs.
The fjord stretches from Lysekil and some 30 km inward. You can driftdive from boat if there are no strong westerly winds. Or dive from the shore.
One option is to dive right west of the ferry Skår-Finsbo. Or drive south of the ferry to Hällebäck (popular with tankdivers).

Gåseklåvan
Until recently it was believed that one of Swedens best spots for freediving only could be reached by boat. But there is a small dirtroad followed by a walk and a small climb over the cliffs. Once there you have a 50 meter swim to the wall. A sheer drop down to over 70 meters it is believed. A few strokes out it could be as much as 90. The wall is somewhat protected from the SW winds, but any waves will find its way round the corner. It is somewhat tricky to get in for the less vigilante but once in it is one of the best freedives to be had. Usually there is a thermocline some 10 meters which gives less visibility (3-4 meters) but down below usually over 10 meters. Light stretches far down.

1) Gullmaren
2) Ferry to Lysekil
3) Road to Skaftö
4) Road to Torseröd
5) Dirtroad to camping and divesite west of ferry
6) Dirtroad to Gåseklåvan, sign towards "Bokenäs servicehus".
7) End of public road.
8) End of private road.
9) 200 meter walk down to beach.
200 meter walk westvard along shore (some climbing)
10) Gåseklåvan. Rusty chains on opposite side of wall.

A quarry In one of the dark forests north of Sala.
Maxdepth 40 m, cold, 4-6 m vis.
Actually, like most of the quarries in Sweden, the owners of the area sometimes look at strangers as trespassengers. Therefore it's good to have a little relation to the owner or at least dive with people who have.
For diving around Örebro- talk to ÖrebroApnea
- there is a 44 meter quarry there

Diving above the arctic circle! This lake has probably swedens best visibility. On a good day all the way to the bottom. Scenery is dramatic. mountains to the clouds on three sides. Weather changing all the time. It is small enough to swim around in approx two hours. But it is truly cold. 5 mm wet suit will keep you warm only 20-30 minutes. Heated water poured down your suit will help. Since it is 800 meters above the sea there is less oxygen in the air. Don´t expect to perform your best. Mobile phones doesn´t work. |
