Hemmoor Cup

The Kreidesee in Hemmoor 80 km west of Hamburg is probably one of northern europes best places for training freediving (see detailed info on Hemmoor old quarry).

For the second year the Hemmoor Cup was held here on the 6-7 july 2001. Constant and static. A well organized competition with 43 participants (8 women) coming from six different countries. Two ropes in constant and two zones in static made it possible to keep the competition within the day. Weather was perfect. A TV link was set up from a UW video down at the bottom of the rope to a screen on shore. Not the best of picture quality though.

Four national records were set. Official results can be seen on AIDA Deutschland internetpage.

Short video from the championships and diving in the Kreidesee (click here - quicktime only. 3.3MB). More extensive video can be bought from AIDA deutschland.

Kreidesee at Hemmoor. An old quarry. The statue of liberty contains stone taken from here. Mostly filled with scuba divers. There is a charge of 17D-mark per day for divng

An old carwreck at 17 meters.
All kind of depths up to 60 meters can be found.

Visibility is good. 10-20 meters. Here 18 meters down and still a lot of light. Here Jonas is coming out of a caravan at 24 meters of depth. By night he shared caravan with Peter Weinmann who prefered depths down to 56 meters.
Maximum depth was set to 56 meters. 7 participants choose this depth and the selection of who made it to the german national team had to be decided in static. 56 meters was choosen by Karsten Schneider. Here we se him practicing on his OK sign. Karsten took the third place in the german national team, beating Christoph Thiel with only half a point.

Frank Hund pushing his static time up to around 6 minutes. Here receiving oxygen after B.O.
In the background Hubert Maier who held his breath for 7 minutes and 2 seconds.

Webmaster checking out the carwreck at 18 meters. The day after he gets samba after 30 meters without fins and then samba after 5.03 in static. Do not worry, he i s use to it.
After Frank Hunds B.0 and Maier only diving to 11 meters, Curt Teichgräber knows he has only to beat Sebastian Schulz in static. They start at the same time. Schulz stops at 5.09...

Curt continues to 5.59...and gets up with a shriek of joy.

German champion. 124 points.

All results.
